And here is Jack’s idea for a small B-29:
Some years ago when the event venue was first changed from Pasadena to its present location at the Ontario Convention Center I was flying demonstration duty for GWS. That first year was a disaster for the demo pilots as the “flight venue” as it was generously called was a spot against an interior wall measuring what seemed to be approximately the size of a postage stamp. Undaunted, we attempted to fly such craft as SlowStiks, Tiger Moths and such but finally gave up when one plane darn near took out a very expensive sailplane well out of the “flight area”. To make matters worse, many others were flying aircraft all over the place over the crowd’s heads with absolutely no frequency control in existence. A disaster waiting to happen. Event Organizer Jay Mealy who himself was had been drafted for the job that year was in real life the AMA/FAA liaison with no prior experience with organizing the event. I approached him with my concerns…a bunch of times over the course of the weekend. It was decided that we could try to get an adjoining ballroom for flying in the following year. Cool!
The following year I was halfway to the GWS booth when a hand was clapped on my shoulder spinning me around. It was Jay. “Glad to see you, Mark.” “Likewise, Jay.” “I’m REALLY glad to see you, Mark.“ Something was up. “Why??” “I need your help. I’ve got no frequency control, no organization but we do have a bunch of vendor pilots that want to fly. Can you help?” Oh, brother. I gave him a short grocery list of things we’d need and informed GWS that I’d be back, if possible, citing my conversation with Jay and headed for the ballroom. I grabbed a couple of friends on the way that I recognized and drafted them as extra eyes and called a pilot’s meeting over the PA. The flying area was better but half of what we use today.
Oh, boy. At least two dozen pilots stood there excited and wanting go get to the flying. The frequency board was a dry erase board on an easel with an eraser and a marker. The pilot’s meeting consisted of this short speech
“Hi. I’m Mark. We’re going to call this next couple of days ‘organized chaos’. You MUST be a current AMA member to fly here this weekend. This dry erase board is the frequency control pin board. When you get ready to fly, write your name down with your frequency number next to it. When you are finished, erase it so the next guy can fly. If you can’t deal with that, please leave now because you’re too stupid to be here. Try to avoid the sprinklers in the ceiling as knocking one off will end this weekend very quickly. Share the air and have a good time.” Absolute carnage ensued. Thirty-five planes showed up and three were left standing Sunday afternoon with the trash cans full of small foam pieces and orange chunks of GWS props. I’m not sure who had more fun…the spectators or the pilots but apparently the ballroom smelled of foamsafe CA kicker for days afterwards.

Alex Smith is an 11yo Black Sheep Squadron pilot that we “adopted” on Sunday while his grandfather worked next door at the Make and Take exhibit.
The following years saw me becoming a permanent fixture in the ballroom, the doubling of the flight area, addition of a floor-to-ceiling safety net which showed its value early on and pretty much the same bunch of crazies that have graced the place since Day One. We also enjoy the appearance of many of the hobby’s notables. We have had such pilots flying alongside us as Mark Leesburg, Jason Shulman, Andrew Jesky, Alan and Danny Szabo, Tim Jones and Jason Krause amongst many other great pilots. We also see flight teams from vendors such as Align, DW Foamies (Thanks, Mike!!), Futaba, Castle Creations and others. Carl Rankin of RC Trayman.com always brings along something new and wonderful made of Reynolds Wrap, soda straws and sewing thread that always fly so gracefully.
That’s how the goings-on in Ballroom A/B started and it continues to improve each and every year. Our regular venue guys are: Pete Rissman (PGR on RCGroups) is from Costa Mesa and is our very capable DJ. He prides himself on a great mix of music that somehow often matches what is going on in the air. Jim Scott (Pismo) is from Penasquitos has a great eye for detail. Joey Cass is a Giant Scale pilot from the Claremont area. I met him at the Chula Vista field late one evening and shamed him into flying my Air Hogs Sport. His dad is a retired weapons designer with the Sidewinder air-to-air missile and Phalanx ship defensive system to his credit amongst others and quite a character. Last and certainly not least is Fred Bronk. He’s the e-heli guru on RCGroups. Fred and I have been doing this stuff together since the first days of RCX at the Anaheim Convention Center now at the Los Angeles FairPlex. Fred hails from the Sacramento area and got me my first gig at RCX flying for GWS and I hold him somewhat responsible for starting the whole mess. The faces change sometimes depending on schedule but most make plans a year in advance for the occasion. I thank each and every one of them for their efforts, talents and time invested in making the flying venues at both events safe and fun for everyone.
Safe flying!

This LMR/F5J event is designed for any model powered by an “outrunner” with flux ring dimensions not to exceed 28mm in diameter and 16 mm in length. Either 2-cell Lipos or 7-cell Nicd/Nimhs may be used.
The contest consists of three, consecutive, mass launches. The total score will determine final placing. Motor runs will be determined at the flight line before the first launch and will be the same duration for each successive launch. No interlaunch battery charging will be allowed. Scoring will be 6 points per minute (one point per 10 seconds, rounded up). Bonus points for accurate, full-stop landings, are to be assessed from the nose of the aircraft — 10, 20, or 30 points per flight. Landings off field, flights longer than 15 minutes, or the use of additional motor run time will result in no points for that launch.

Thank you Bill Fee
On behalf of all the members of SEFSD, I would like to thank Bill Fee for his many years of service to the club as Peak Charge editor. Bill produced the finest newsletter this club has ever seen. The editorship is all too often a thankless job spending countless hours creating something attractive and informative. Please show Bill your appreciation for his years of service next time you see him, he has more than earned it.

The first Sunday afternoon session had several Orange Co. and Riverside Co. pilots drive all the way down only to find that due to a mixup in communications there was no Rec. Ctr. person available to open the gym for us. They had a nice time flying in the Patio anyway and said they’d be back anytime we had a scheduled Sunday flying session. Our Jan. 2nd Sunday flying session did not get the word out soon enough for the out-of-towners to make it down, but 17 pilots and 26 planes did come and had a great time, with all saying they’d come on Sundays again if we held a flyin.
The Tuesday evenings from 7-9 PM have had 20 or more pilots, except the one right after the AMA Show in Ontario, poor communications on it being held kept the attendance down, and an average of 31 airplanes of all types at each session. The most amazing was Jack Hix’s SIG Demoiselle which flew at a very scale walking speed, and has a 44in. wing span, and only weighs 7.8 oz.
At first we had several midairs when too many planes were flying at once, but that seems to have sorted itself out and lately we’ve had very few and they’ve been very minor. Mike Morgan has given us a aircraft grouping that gets similar and smaller groups flying together and has worked out very well the two times we used it. It and the general flying rules are also included in this edition of the Peak Charge.
Many thanks for your enthusiasm,
Wayne
This is a very serious issue for several reasons; the first is that this was the first that the club leadership had heard of either landing or contact with the SDPD and Lindberg Tower. To say that several of us were stunned is the least you could say! This issue is so serious that to try to ‘Bury It In The Sand’ is beyond reasonable thinking. Issues like this must be addressed and dealt with as quickly as possible or they WILL ESCALATE and become major issues forcing closing of the Sea World Drive Field in no time at all. To point out that we are now on thin ice with the management of Lindberg Field Tower until we can remedy the situation and create a positive working relationship with them is understatement and only one of many tasks facing us in the near term. We must still get on good terms with the FAA and SDPD Helicopter operations to assure the long term use of our flying field.
Currently our Board of Directors is formulating a plan to address these issues and remediate any animosity created in the past. They will need the 100% cooperation and assistance of all our members this year and in the years to come. If you feel you can not give 100% of your effort to saving our flying site, please quit now and go somewhere else. Thank you.
On another note.
I fear that the latest developments with the Lindberg Tower, SDPD, and FAA would prove to be too much for me to handle in the job as President. With the revelation that there was in fact a very serious problem with the Lindberg Field Tower, who controls the airspace around the city from 0-500 ft + the Class B airspace, I have decided that I can’t be President of the Silent Electric Flyer of San Diego any longer.
After spending the weekend thinking about the newest twist to our club predicament, I’ve decided I must resign the SEFSD Presidency as of now for personal health reasons.
Not an easy thing to do, but I am just not up to leading a battle to get things fixed up and creating a proper response the Lindberg Tower, FAA, and Parks and Rec. etc. And getting them to all allow us to continue on in a meaningful way while getting rid of the elements in the club that pull it down and create this kind of mess.
I wish you the best of luck and of course will support you and the club as best as I can in the future.
I will continue to host the Indoor Tuesday night Fly-Ins for now, and work to get Mike Morgan & possibly someone else to take over this responsibility.

Yes, a scratch built multi-engined- gyro- stabilized confabulation of componentery that I had no idea of how to make. I was going to build … a MULTICOPTER ! (A multicopter is defined as any rotor borne aircraft having more than on lift producing rotor. The standard nomenclature being that of a bi-copter, tri-copter, quadrocopter,penta,hexa,octo,deca..copter etc. )
But, which one to build? Decisions, decisions. Well, simple, cheap, and easy suits my lifestyle so a tricopter seemed to be a reasonable first step. A quick internet search and WAH-LAH! The MultiWiiCopter shows up. Yes, this looks like a pilot’s aircraft, no hanging around with a camera like an airborne slug for me, no sir-ee. This is the real deal.
( to be continued next month, in the mean time look up RC Groups under multirotor helicopters and look for MultiWiiCopter for more information)
Rocket (Bob) Kreutzer
Some examples:
Imagine the perfect geometry of the loop as you look skyward directly in front of yourself, that is, see the shape of a constant radius that begins with the wings level at a good height and then a gentle pull back on the elevator to initiate the first ¼ of the loop. As it begins the ascent it might have a tendency to get off heading and start to corkscrew or drift in toward you or drift out away from you. You want to use only slight pressure on the rudder to yaw the aircraft and maintain the imagined perfect geometry that I mentioned in the last sentence. Once you have set the elevator pressure to scribe the first ¼ loop you must maintain that very same shape for the duration of the loop. That means that as the aircraft finishes the first ¼ loop you might have to release the elevator ever so slightly to achieve the vertical climb necessary to duplicate the geometry of the first quarter loop and maintain the proper heading even as the aircraft is pulled by the p factor of the propeller to the left. Constantly pressurizing the rudder to maintain the proper heading and working the throttle to keep the speed up and avoiding any flat spots that have a tendency to occur when all of this is going on….this is the challenge.
As your aircraft begins to reach apogee, or the top of the loop, more throttle control is essential and a different touch on the elevator is required. You want to reduce substantially the power as you reach 12 o’clock noon and you actually will be thinking about floating it over the top and letting gravity do its work. As the imagined geometry continues into the next quadrant of the loop the radius shape and size must be maintained and the pressure on the rudder will be less intense due to the power off setting. No flat spots or changes in the radius should be occurring at any time and as the aircraft reaches the 3 o clock with the third quadrant complete the throttle setting needs to be increased somewhat to maintain the flow through the fourth quadrant of the loop. If, at this time, you have pictured your loop geometry in your mind’s eye you will see the entry point of the loop, that point which initiated the beginning of this loop coming up and you will want to scribe the last quadrant so as to reach that juncture precisely and at the same elevation that you began the loop. As the throttle is applied the aircraft will have its tendencies to pull to the left from the torque of the motor and this will occur anytime you apply power. As you finish the loop try to maintain a leveling off to horizontal flight without the very ugly and lame porpoising up and down.
The complete loop, done as described above, is beautiful and impressive and it is the essential building block of much of what is done in precision aerobatics. Think for a moment, anytime you leave level flight you are performing a one quarter loop or a one eighth loop to begin an up line or a 45 degree up line and any figure that is completed to get to horizontal flight is the same. These looping portions are all important in contest flying and it is the building block of much of what good pilots do without much thought, that is, it just starts to become natural to watch every looping portion to keep it under control and avoid change in radius and flat spots. Matching quarter loops and doing 5/8’s and 3 / 4 loops with constant radius are going to occur over and over again and you need to develop an eye for those geometric shapes in all areas of the aerobatic box….i.e. The sky in front of you.
When you have practiced this over until you can keep a reasonable control of the loop throughout the loop in front of yourself then move it to the left and right of center. Next, try a roll at the apogee of the loop and maintain the radius shape as you do it. After that you might want to try doing an outside loop, that is, enter the loop from inverted flight and practice maintaining the constant radius and all that I have talked about throughout the outside loop. Challenge yourself by trying to do two loops that are exactly identical in front of you….inside and then outside and then if you need more of a challenge for yourself and you are ready for it then do the loops from the top….start high and exit high. The challenges are endless that can be applied. See in the attached aresti drawing what a simple to complex loop can be. Hope you will try this and I hope that you will find success. Feel free to approach me or any IMAC pilot to critique your efforts and give you feed back on the quality of your loops.

Stick Patter
by John Forester
Introduction
These are short, summarized thoughts that the model flying instructor can use to instruct the student primary pilot during or before dual-control flight instruction.
Transmitter
Your transmitter has two sticks, left and right.
Move the left stick only forward and back, to control power. Forward, more power; Backward, less power. At the start, your instructor will tell you where to set the power. Later you will learn to modify it. When beginning you will fly at Cruise power, comfortably faster than necessary to stay up. That gives you a reserve of speed and power to keep you up when maneuvering.
The right stick controls the attitude of the plane. Right and Left movement controls the bank angle of the plane. Forward movement, Push, points the ship down; Backward movement, Pull, points the ship up. That’s what you see, but that is not important. The important function of Pull and Push is explained later.
Flying Forces
In a plane in steady level flight, two pairs of forces balance each other. Engine Thrust balances Drag. Lift balances Weight (gravity). But you mustn’t think of Lift as always being straight up. Lift is always perpendicular to the wing, however tilted the wing is.
Wing Action
The wing creates Lift by pushing down the air that it passes through. Think of the wing as a flat plate being pushed through the air. The flat plate is sloped so that its leading edge is higher than the trailing edge. If that slope is zero, the flat plat won’t produce Lift. As that slope is increased, the air is pushed downward more vigorously and the amount of Lift increases.
Real wings aren’t flat plates; they have the same characteristics but with higher efficiency.
The important function of Push and Pull is to control the amount of Lift. Pull increases the wing’s slope, making more Lift but slowing you down. Push decreases the wing’s slope, decreasing Lift and speeding you up.
Angle of Attack
Every wing has a slope toward the wind at which it produces no Lift. That is called the Zero Angle of Attack (AOA). Since a plane has weight, it can fly only by using a positive AOA to generate Lift.
Paying attention to the AOA, which is indicated by how far back you have Pulled the stick, is extremely important. Too much Pull, with too little power, and the wing stalls, which means that Lift disappears.
Lift and Drag
Remember this well. You can’t get Lift without producing Drag. That’s a law of science. To get more Lift by increasing the angle of attack, you have to either slow down or use more power.
Circles
Just like a bicycle on a curve, a plane has to bank into a turn. To make a gentle circle to the right, move the stick gently Right until the plane has achieved a small banking angle, less than 10 degrees. At this moment the plane will enter a right circle. Lift, being perpendicular to the wing, will be pulling the plane towards the center of the circle, and the drag of the tail will be causing the plane’s body to turn around following the circle.
If you were to continue this for a full circle, you would see that the plane had lost altitude. To circle while maintaining altitude, you need more Lift, which means Pull, a little bit, on the right stick. For many primary planes, you Pull the stick about 1/4 of the distance you moved it Right (or Left, for a left circle).
Lazy Eights
This is a useful exercise for any student. Make a full circle, say right, followed by a full circle in the opposite direction, left. Each circle must maintain altitude, and be without bounce or drop as you switch from one circle to the opposite circle. This trains your coordination of Right or Left with Pull and then Push, so the plane moves smoothly.
Stalling
Until now, you have been making gentle movements, climbing or turning, relying on the safety reserve of speed and power that you have when flying at cruising speed. If you needed much more lift, you might Pull much more, thus increasing the AOA to get more Lift. That’s fine for a bit, but when the wing gets to an AOA of about 18 degrees to its movement through the air, the air flow around it just tumbles into turbulence and Lift disappears. Then there’s no Lift to hold the plane up, and it falls. This is called Stalling. Unpleasant at any time, and very dangerous when near the ground.
While stalling is affected by load carried and speed of flight, the only thing that causes stalling is pointing the wing to too far up, which is done by Pulling the stick excessively when trying to get more Lift.
Remember this well. The way to end a stall is to Push the stick somewhat forward. That decreases the AOA until the wing gets a grip again on the air and the plane becomes controllable.
More Vigorous Movements
You are now ready to make more vigorous turns, turns with smaller radius. That means more bank angle (stick more to the side) and more Pull. Since Pull increases Lift, and increased Lift increases Drag, you need more Power to counter that increased Drag.
You need more Lift for two reasons. With increased Bank, Lift is no longer pointing directly away from Weight, gravity, so it has to be stronger to keep the plane in the air. To turn the plane quicker and sharper requires still more Lift to pull it around quicker. When the plane is banked 45 degrees in a turn you need about twice as much Lift and Power as for slowest level flight.
Therefore, before beginning practice in vigorous turns, increase Power, so you have excess Power available during the critical parts of the turn. Then practice Lazy Eights at higher and higher angles of bank until the plane feels uncertain. This depends on the Power you have available, and the general design of the plane. Aerobatic and fighter planes can stand higher angles of bank than can general aviation and trainer planes.
If you get into a stall, with the plane getting uncontrollable and falling, then Push somewhat, reducing the AOA, until the wings get a new grip on the air and the plane becomes controllable. You are likely then to have the nose down with still a lot of bank. First level the wings by sideways movement of the stick, then Pull until the plane is level again.
Loops
If your planehas sufficient Power to make loops, here’s how you do it. Start level flight with wings level. Go to full Power. Wait for speed to increase. Then Pull. The plane will make a loop. As it goes over the top, close the throttle. When it comes back to level, center the stick to level out and return to cruise Power. You should recognize that all around the loop, Lift is pulling the plane toward the center of the loop, just as in a turn it pulls the plane toward the center of the turn.
Turns at Low Speed and Altitude
Landing approaches are the most dangerous part of flying. You are flying slowly, using little Power or just gliding in. On the typical circuit you must make two 90 degree turns: Downwind leg to base leg, base leg to landing strip. Flying slowly you have very little reserve Speed or Power. That means that these turns must be made gently. If a turn is made too sharply, with little reserve speed or power, the plane will stall, and you don’t have sufficient height above the ground to recover.
On landing approach turns, limit banking and Pull to gentle levels because of the danger of stalling the plane at low speed and altitude.

Monthly Meeting:
Outdoor meetings are held at the SEFSD club field at Mission Bay, typically on the fourth Saturday of the month. Please see the home page for the latest meeting information.
The following frequency listings are those that have a possible potential for interference at our field location because of adjacent paging channels in the frequency band. However, major manufacturers have advised that a dual conversion receiver will not have problems with interference from such legally assigned adjacent frequency paging channels, if the radio in use has been properly tuned. UPDATE: The frequencies were scanned in mid 2001 and found the same interference as before. (During a three week November 1997 test, a scanner picked up paging signals only between those channels shown below):

Home of the San Diego ElectroglideThis LMR/F5J event is designed for any model powered by an “outrunner” with flux ring dimensions not to exceed 28mm in diameter and 16mm in length. Either 2-cell LiPos or 7-cell NiCd/NiMhs may be used. The contest consists of three, consecutive, mass launches. The total score will determine final placing. Motor runs will be determined at the flight line before the first launch and will be the same duration for each successive launch. No inter-launch battery charging will be allowed. For more info contact Don Wemple

HOW TO BECOME A 2017 MEMBER OF THE
SILENT ELECTRIC FLYERS of SAN DIEGO
PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE FILLING OUT THE APPROPRIATE FORM AND PAYING DUES
SEFSD MEMBERSHIP:
Membership for SEFSD costs $45 for the calendar year (January 1st through December 31st). Additional family members in the same household pay $10 each for the same calendar year.
AMA MEMBERSHIP:
To join the SEFSD flying club, you must be a current member of the ACADEMY OF MODEL AERONAUTICS . AMA Membership provides you and our club important liability insurance coverage. We do not accept the Park Pilot AMA or 3 month free trial membership as it does not provide the amount of liability insurance coverage needed for SEFSD. You must have your 2017 AMA Membership completed before proceeding.
There are many members whose AMA membership expires December 31, 2016. When you renew your AMA membership, it will not expire until December 31, 2017 and your 2017 SEFSD Membership badge is good for the entire year.
—Important Note for New AMA Members (whose AMA membership does not expire on December 31st)
Unlike the SEFSD, AMA starts their annual membership the month that you sign up. Consequently, you will have two expiration dates in any given year, one for SEFSD and one for the AMA. You will be issued two separate SEFSD membership cards corresponding to those dates. For those new AMA members it can be a bit confusing. Your AMA membership validation is checked monthly by the SEFSD Membership Coordinator. You will not be able to fly if your AMA membership has expired. For example: if your AMA membership expires August 31st, you may not fly starting in September until you renew with AMA. If you do not renew your AMA membership until September 15, you will have no liability coverage and consequently you are not allowed to fly with SEFSD from September 1st through September 14th. If you renew with no lapse in AMA membership, a new badge will be sent with your new AMA expiration date. Your membership coordinator will also send you an email the month your AMA membership expires so you can avoid any lapse in AMA coverage. The names of those who have let their membership with AMA expire will be given to the SEFSD Board of Directors.
