The Prez’ Sez’ for June 2012

First and foremost is the meeting at the field on the 23rd followed by the Bomb Drop event and lunch!…….Should be great fun. I and the rest of the Board of Directors will be proposing a number of ideas that we hope to get your input and or approval on. So PLEASE make every effort to attend. Remember, this is YOUR club…………Support it.

Browns & Frank If you were unable to attend the Alliant Gym fly-in Friday the 15th, you missed a great time! Approximately 26 members and guests enjoyed 2 hrs of non-stop flying in a beautiful location. I’ll give you more info’ at the meeting.

Very shortly now a new set of field rules will be posted at the field. Not that too much has changed from the past rules, but I would advise you all to be aware of them and abide by them. With that said, let’s look at #3. It states that pilots shall be positioned near the edge of the field, in front of the pits BEHIND the runway fence at a pilot station. Notice it says BEHIND THE FENCE. I stress this because of the danger of being struck by a wayward aircraft. If you think you can get out of the way in time……………..YOU ARE WRONG! ’nuff said.

Indoor flying at Alliant

SEFSD had their first indoor fly at Alliant Gym on June 15th. All who attended realized an outstanding indoor venue. Even with 24+ pilots, there was enough room for everyone. Eventually folks just scattered themselves out along the periphery and had nearly uninterrupted flying. Alliant is nothing like Miramar, there is almost too much room. Mike morgan and his crew floated his big foamies around with no interference to anyone. The folks with the small slow planes could find an edge or corner and never come near anyone else. Don Rice ripped around with a wing more suited to outdoor but still had enough room. Tim Attaway hovered and danced with his foamie off in a corner. Jim Bonnardel was all lit up with his quad-copter. I sent my Blade 120SR spinning and careening around the center of the floor with reckless abandon. Thank you in a big way to Tony and Amy for giving us this opportunity to fly in their gym!!

A Tale of a Champ

My Champ arrived under the Christmas tree in 2010. It was my first RC airplane since I built and flew single channel, escapement controlled models in the late 1950s.

With the help and encouragement of experienced flyers at the gym, I taught myself to fly the Champ..After a year I’d rate my flying skill a good solid C+.

The micro Champ is a tough and sturdy aircraft, great for beginners. While honing my flying skills I I’ve flown the Champ many times, not on purpose, into all three solid walls and the curtain wall in the gym. Also, a couple of nose dives into the floor for good measure.

Damage to the Champ has been interesting. First I lost the spinner. Then the left wheel came off. Along the way the wing was dented, the nose was cuffed and dented. The hardest repairs were the two times I damaged the rudder and vertical fin.

Then to add insult to injury, the Champ had a mid-air collision with a multi-rotor heli-saucer, which broke off the left wing tip.

But the most spectacular incident happened the evening of May 22, 2012. I flew the Champ to high and landed on top of a ceiling light fixture. The plane disappeared completely. Was it beamed up? Well, not having anything to lose, I advanced the throttle all the way , and after some noise, the Champ rocketed off of the light fixture, and I was able to land it safely, with only a few new scrapes to the finish.

Cats have 9 lives, so do Champs.

Night Flying Report for June 2012

VP Tim Attaway had a bunch of batteries, so Steve Dente was given the sticks for his virgin nighttime flight, as well as giving me a battery pack to have a go at his Mentor since mine was out of commission for the night. There was not much room at the flight line due to the large spectator crowd, it is apparent that the lights in the skies brings visitors in like a moth to a flame. Flying continued with everyone getting in lots of flights. There was one close call when John G and Tim A passed within a couple of feet of each other. Where it would have been catastrophic, was that John was actually towing something from his banner/tow hook on his Mentor, and had let it go just seconds before the close call. Had he still been towing, Tim’s Mentor would have surely gotten tangled up in it. The close call had the crowd gasping! Many of the pilots and visitors stuck around until the Sea World fireworks show (every night at 9:50 during the summer).

If you do not have a plane with lights, its real easy to do. I highly urge you to take a look at the LED light options at many vendors (HobbyPartZ is recommended) and see how easy and cheap night flying is. You don’t necessarily need fast, acrobatic ships as the slow ones make night flying easy and fun.

Electroglide Report for June 2012

I think everyone is really getting used to the electronic start and
timer, its nice to see folks coming to the line on time for a good,
prompt start. Its important that you come ready to fly out of respect
for all those that are ready. Since we started the electronic timer,
we have not had to ‘hold’ a start while someone shoves a battery in at
the last minute. That alone has lessened the stresses of someone
holding the whole group up, and is worth thanking you all for.
Being ready means you are committed to Electroglide and the rest of
the pilots who are ready to go.

Don had us a fresh target right laid out early enough for some
practice, and with the field getting soft and fluffy again, it
didnt take long to start to disappear.

The thermals cooperated, we had good lift in spots for all 4
launches. We only had one bird showing us the way in round 3, and he
was not fooling us at all, he was simply saying “Under me, is where
you want to be!”. It was natures way of showing us where the lift
was, and it was really going off.

As far as scoring goes, we had good ones in both active classes.
Robert Stinson and Pedro Brantuas both broke the 300 point mark, with
good times and landing points each round. Remembering that Bob was
flying a Radian, and Pedro with his unlimited class ship, Bob was
only was only 8 points behind Pedro, Awesome! It is easy to see
that the trusty Radian is always a good, competitive ship. Kudos Bob
(should we be happy that Pedro does not have a Radian??)

3rd Place Don Wemple 209 points

In Open Class:
1st Place Pedro Brantuas 309 points
2nd Place Jim Bonnardel 212 points
3rd Place Jim Shelton 134 points

Everyone deserves a hearty pat on the back for making Electroglide
what it is. When other events are being cancelled/rescheduled/
postponed due to folks not being able to make it, its nice to see
the flock of birds jumping to altitude during Electroglide. There is
no doubt that Electroglide is still going strong, and is a vital part
of SEFSD.
