GENERAL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 23RD

REPORT BY TIM ATTAWAY

On Nov 23rd, the SEFSD General Meeting and election was conducted at SEFSD field at 10 AM and 40 or so members were in attendance. Agenda items discussed were as follows:

Introduction of Andy Norbeck, a Nazerene University film student and we talked about how he wanted to incorporate our flying club with a band video production. This filming will be on Dec 7th and will not interrupt the normal flying too much and feel free to bring you most interesting aircraft, rotor etc. and be ready to “ham” it up for his videographer.

SDPD helicopter Able has been in our airspace lately and due to an incident involving yours truly on Saturday after the electro glide we are strongly recommending that when the black and white approaches our airspace all aircraft should land immediately or stay as low as possible to provide no reason for our club to be in the log book of SDPD air wing.

Paul Guidice, treasurer of SEFSD, explained to all the need for patience in getting the renewals done and the cards for 2014 out to everyone.   Please use Paypal if you can and be ready for an event on the first Saturday of January 2014 to come to the field and eat good food, fly in a little event and pick up your new badge for 2014. Thanks Paul!

Information pertaining to the Grand 2013 SEFSD Banquet was shared and sign-up sheets were out to look at and money was being accepted by Tim Attaway to reserve your banquet attendance. See much, much more on line where you may sign up for a variety of supporting roles. December 8th is the tentative cut-off date to sign up for the Dec 15th Sweetwater Women’s’ Club BASH. 330 members plus family means that those reservations for the 115 seats may go away sooner than later.

New tables project have been conceived, planned and now constructed principally by Don Griffin, Tom Erickson and John Gibson plus a few others have got involved in installation. We appreciate this can do attitude and owe them and anyone else that steps up to help a Big THANK YOU. The BOD has approved the funds for 12 total at a cost of 110.00 each so that means making our site much nicer for around 1400.00 dollars. Thanks again Don and Tom! (Note) it really is part of being in a club to step forward and volunteer to get involved and help out with projects and events….you will find that it feels good too. So, next time you see something that needs to be done, just say “yes….I can help with that.”

Jim Bonnardel, BOD member and Electro-glide boss, explained to the members present that a special Electro glide event is being planned so if you have done even one event come down to the last one of 2013 to see what he has in store to reward your participation. Don’t miss this…you could be sorry.

The Election of SEFSD executive board and members at large for 2014 was conducted and the following gentlemen have stepped forward to lead the club through the next 12 months, congratulations to them and a thank you for those clubmembers that attended the meeting and voted:  President, Tim Attaway, Vice President Jim Bonnardel, Treasurer Paul Guidice, Secretary Scott Fuller, Safety Officer Quan Nguyen     Members at Large: Dr. Ray Fulks, Brad Bender and George Rebello. Continuing on as out-going president and now Chairman of the Board Frank Gagliardi.

These nine people will all have a vote as the amendment to 4.1 was passed unanimously by those present. Isabel Guidice was introduced as our new membership person, she volunteered to help in this capacity and we are so lucky and happy to have her to help us with this very important job. 333 members and going higher I predict!!!   (I only know of one other club in S. California that is bigger.)

Play Nice, Play Safe and be Happy.

Typically dispensary can offer to customers with convenient treatments for variant diseases. With the Internet flooded with various online drugstores selling variant remedies, purchasing medicines online is no longer a dream for most of us. You can order online drug to treat chronic treatment of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis or spasticity. Few medicaments are used to treat impotence. Cialis is a cure set to treat a lot of afflictions. What do you think about best place to buy generic viagra online? Where you can read correct data about ? (Read more ). Perhaps you already know something about the question. Ordinarily when slightly goes wrong with your erection, it can exert your sex living as well as your overall well-being. Once you’ve studied the basics about men’s erectile disfunction from us, you may want to see what other reputable sources have to say. Online pharmacist services are the only safe variant if you are going to get remedies, like Cialis, online.

The Prez’ Sez’ for Nov./Dec. ’13

Frank w/BandAs my two years as president of the SEFSD draws to a close, I reflect on what all of you have accomplished. Field improvements have been refined and are now ongoing. Premier events, such as the CAP Program, Veterans and Wounded Warrior Salute, Electroglide and others played an important part in achieving Gold Leader Club status.

The acquisition of a new indoor site has expanded the scope of the SEFSD. But more than any of these has been the the growth of the club which now stands at over 330 members. Not bad for a “Bunch of fliers at a dirt field!” I have had the good fortune to work with a very dedicated group of members who gave much and asked for very little in return. You all know who you are and I THANK YOU!… Finally, I ask that you give the incoming officers the same level of support. They will be working very hard……for you…

Congratulations to the 2014 F5B Team

F5B is a class of “motor gliders” as defined by the FAI which is a international body based in Switzerland that governs all types of “aero sports” Information on the FAI can be found here: http://www.fai.org <http://www.fai.org/>  The F5B event is comprised of 3 tasks. The first and most important is the distance task where the pilot tries to get as many legs on a 150 meter course as they can with in a 200 second window of time. The pilot  are only allowed to run the motor on the end of the course where he is standing—when the plane enters the course the motor must be switched off. A typical distance flight will have 10 climbs of 2 seconds or less with the rest of the time spent gliding at high speed on the measured 150 meter course. A contest level pilots will get between 44 and 50 legs in the 200 second window followed by a 10 minute duration flight. In the duration phase the pilots can run the motor as desired but the timing system will subtract the motor run from the score. At the end of the 10 minutes the pilot has to land within a series of circles as close to the 10 minute mark as possible. A good pilot will get the model on the ground within 3-4 seconds of the target time. Additional points are awarded for landing in the smallest circle. For those that are interested here are links to the full  event rules for the event :http://www.fai.org/fai-documents Click on the “Sporting Code Section 4-F5 Electric”

F5B Site Layout

New for this year were “juniors” trying out for the team. Both Gabriel Mather and Patrick Liddy gave it their best with Patrick gaining a spot on the 2014 team spot which is reserved for young fliers.

F5B Scoresheet

Also notable was the return of Grant Messenger who came out from Florida to give F5B a go again after being away for 20 years! Also Jerry Bridgman and Bob Sliff came down from Orange County—both of whom were very involved in F5B in the early years.

Steve and Michelle Manganelli along with several club members helped make the contest run smoothly—although some broken wires did manage to delay one round for a bit until some file soldering could be done. Michelle did a great job in making sure we had a nice lunch spread for both days. A special thanks to all of those that helped!

The Prez’ Sez’ for Oct./Nov. ’13

Frank n CubNov. 9th, Nov,10th and Nov.11th are three very important days. Especially to members and former members of the Armed Forces. Nov.11th is Veterans Day & Armistice Day which celebrates the end of WWI…..”The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” which was to signify the end of the “War to end all wars….Well, at least that was the thought. Nov.10th is the birthday of the founding of the United States Marine Corps. Nov.9th is the day that the SEFSD has the opportunity to honor those “Who some gave all, but ALL gave some”……Our Salute to Veterans and Wounded Warriors of All campaigns will commence at 0800 with scale flying until 1200 and then a noon time ceremony at our field. I encourage all members to attend and say thank you to all our Veteran members and guests. Open flying will commence after lunch. Tim Attaway will be providing “vittles” at no charge to all SEFSD members and veterans in attendance!

For those members who were unable to attend our last event where we collected $1000 for the Wounded Warrior program, you will have one more chance to help!

There are a few other “surprises” in the works for this event, so this is one you don’t want to miss.

It has been my pleasure to serve as your president for the last two years. As my term comes to a close, I reflect on all that YOU have accomplished, not just I, because without you NOTHING would happen.  You all should take great pride in belonging to one of the finest clubs in SoCal, if not all of CA.!…………See you all on the 9th…..

It Has Always Been the Soldier

It is the soldier,

Rotor Days at the Bay Report

The multicopter events were hosted and run by Jim Bonnardel and Mike Morgan .

Events included an “altitude quest” run by Jim, where the pilot spun a roulette wheel with the resulting number —up to 399 was the target altitude in feet for the pilot to fly to (of course you know we have to stay below 400 feet ). A small recording device normally used in model rockets was used to record the peak altitude and the pilot getting closest to the number they spun won a nice case for their multicopter from GoPro.  Mike Morgan ran a pylon race for the more daring fliers.

Ray Nemovi ran several helicopter events which included “hang time” where the pilot would take the heli up as high as they dared  in 8 seconds then cut the motor power and autorotate down to a landing—the longest duration was the winner. Ray also ran a “drag race” which provided an exciting event for pilots and spectators. The task is pretty much as you would expect—with the helicopters at a standing start they would launch themselves down the length of the runway with the time being measured—and the shortest time being the winner. The big 700 sized helicopters dominated the event.

In addition to the usual  hard core 3D helicopters there were some very nice scale machines. Mike Morgan brought out some new multicopters that are able to do loops and rolls!

We had support from the following companies who donated products for use as prizes:

Align Helicopters
Castle Creations
GoPro Cases  (Jim Bonnardel)
Multicopter Concepts (Mike Morgan)
Heli Direct
NeuMotors (Steve Neu)
Discount Hobby Warehouse

A few pilots waited for darkness on Saturday night to show off their skills at flying at night using both on board LED lighting systems as well as ground based spotlights. At least a couple multicopters bit the dust while wearing Halloween costumes.

Sunday was wide open flying with no events scheduled. At noon Frank and Mike ran the raffle for those in attendance. There was a great selection of both multicopter and heli stuff up for grabs. Most in attendance won at least one item—some 4 or more!

The fliers that attended had a great time with lots of flying and fun. SEFSD will likely make this a annual event. The event was made successful and enjoyable with help from a number of our local fliers and members. In no particular order the event was made possible by the following people: Frank Gagllardi, Mike Morgan, Jim Bonnardel , Ray Nemovi, and Steve Neu, Ray Fulks and Paul Guidice.

Electroglide Report for Oct 2013

By Jim Bonnardel

Fall is upon us! We had a fair turnout for this month, and a new entry into Radian Class.
Jim Shelton, who has been a top competitor in open class,  bought a Radian and decided to give it a go.
We had 9 entries, and a new contestant flying a Calypso (the only one in open class).

The skies did not look too promising,  but alas,  we had pilots maxing out the clock in round 1 showing that you cant always tell what is going to happen when standing in the pits.

Norm had a fun first round,  after launch he was actually watching the wrong plane… we watched one spiral in just missing the bay,  and Norm was still thinking he was in the air.  It was not until the plane he was watching made the turn to come in to land he realized he was not watching his Radian.  Luckily,  no damage and he was able to continue the next 3 rounds and still place 4th!

Be sure to come out in November,  there may be some fun surprises in store!

Radian Class:

Bob Stinson           273
Scott Vance           266
Vince Gonzowski    228
Norm  Arndt          182
Jim Shelton           134
Rich Rogers           112
Randy Wyant         ??

Next month,  another lesson in completing the score sheet…. apparently it was just too much for Randy to figure out!
Novembers E-glide is on the 16th which is as you know…. the 3rd Saturday of the month.

C U There!

The Prez’ Sez’ for Sept./Oct. ’13

Frank & BearcatAs the song title says “OH it’s a long, long, time from May to December, but the days grow short when you reach September”…….Wow, am I dating myself or what?.

Seriously though, In some parts of the country, modelers are preparing to “hunker down” and start building for next year……….and they envy us here in San Diego!

Why am I telling you all this?…..Well it’s because we have a “jewel” that must be protected if we want to continue being the envy of most of the nation. That “jewel” is the SEFSD field and all the others in the area.

When we as a club allow fliers to “push the boundaries” of flight and common sense, we contribute to the potential loss of our privileges………Yes, I said privileges, because access to our field IS a privilege, not a right!…….

We have 330+ members in our club, and of that you should take pride, because every time you take time to introduce a new member to the “rules of the road” you instill a sense of pride of ownership in our “little slice of heaven”………….BUT, when you KNOWINGLY break club rules, what message are you sending then?…..

Soon, nominations and election of officers for 2014  will be upon us. Please consider giving some of your time and talent and “throw your hat in the ring”………….Talk to those whom you feel would serve with the best interest of the club in mind and heart, and if it’s not you then who?

A Rose by any other name is a Rose, but is a Drone by any other name a Drone?

As of most recently, the more common use of the word Drone is related to SUAS vehicles (Small Unmanned Aerial Systems) that include the capability for Military (or Commercial) style activities, armed or otherwise. These are the systems the FAA are most interested in regulating. Typically, a Drone is capable of un-assisted, mission style flights. Such as: Take off, go to location, do something, and return to base completely un-assisted by a human. But in today’s world our military drones still have the capability of being “Mission Flown” from a human for political reasons above any other.

So, are our models Drones? Not exactly. They are however clearly SUAS’, or UAV‘s (Unmanned aerial vehicle) . Any Radio Controlled Aircraft, flown for hobby, education, military or commercial is an UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE. Where the line begins to blur, however, is when you start talking about the capability of that UAV.

This last year, the Board of Directors removed the “Autonomous Ban” on flying at the field. This meant that this rapidly growing segment of our hobby could be enjoyed per the AMA and field operational guidelines. So, we are seeing these systems at the field in growing numbers since many players are entering the hobby market. Locally, we have a company, 3D Robotics that is dedicated to UAV development, and offers one of the most advanced systems available for RC use. Many 3D Robotics employees are club members.

Systems that are autonomous allow the aircraft to fly with electronic stabilization, GPS navigation, and perform ‘missions’ like aerial mapping. They also can perform take offs and landings completely un-assisted. Isn’t that a drone you ask? Still no. Because it is not for commercial or military missions.

Electronic stabilization systems have been a key player in the explosion of Multi-Rotor Aircraft. Without them, there would be no way to keep 4 motors in sync to maintain any stability. Typical multi-rotor systems sample motor RPM over 300 times per second, and communicate that information to systems using Accelerometers made affordable by the new gaming systems and cell phones that can tell which side is up or down, and sense the RATE at which it is turning and moving (unlike traditional Gyros that could only detect changes from its original path, course, or attitude).

So back to the DRONE… is a Multi-Rotor Helicopter a drone? Not in the definitions sense, but the public is using that as a description all too often. Most hobby grade Multis do not have the capability to ‘go somewhere, do something and return’ without a human pilot. But, the more advanced systems for our hobby use GPS navigation to ‘hold position’ and certainly to ‘return to home’ as they most commonly do when activated, or if signal is lost. These hobby grade systems also do things like “Auto Land” when battery power is low. Fixed Wing RC airplanes surely do not do that.

Personally, I have to admit, using the term Drone when traveling with my DJI Phantom. Going through TSA inspection at airports, I always get the question after the raised eyebrow X-ray inspection “What is this?” Just to make it simple I commonly reply “it’s a Photography Drone” and instantly get sent on my way without any further inspection. Is it a drone, no. But the TSA folks know what I mean when I say it.

Something else to understand about these hobby-grade systems is that all of them have ‘failsafes’ built in.   With the loss of RC signal, the device will return to its take off point. When battery is too low, it will remove control from the pilot, and simply land itself (which can be a problem if you are above the wrong place). They are manufactured with the AMA guidelines in mind, and even the more advanced system’s like the APM 2.5 Ardrino board must be capable of instant pilot control simply if the sticks are moved. The PIC (Pilot in Command) does not need to ’flip a switch’ to take it out of any autonomous or assisted flight, simply moving the sticks gives the pilot control over any system. Also, the RC Transmitter is NOT shunted away from the system, but a key component. If the RC system experiences any trouble, loss of signal, interference, dead battery etc, the systems go into failsafe and either return to a set ‘loiter’ point, or in the case of a Multi-rotor, simply return to the take off location. Of course these fail safe’s cannot compensate for all failures, if you run out of battery before it auto lands, it will crash. If you ‘toss a prop‘, on a quad, it will crash (however if you toss a prop on a 6 or 8 motor multi, it will compensate and keep flying)

I can tell you from experience, that very few of the pilots at SEFSD that fly traditional aircraft bother with the Failsafe settings because they are often complicated, difficult to understand, and don’t offer any security other than placing all the servos and throttle settings to a set point. What good is a failsafe that is not set? Exactly, no good whatsoever.

For those of you that are still wondering what all these acronyms of our alphabet soup mean when it relates to our operations, here’s a small list for you to be aware a of:

SUAS                                 Small Unmanned Aerial System

SUAV                                 Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

FPV                                    First Person View (flying via a camera view)

RC                                     Radio Controlled (just in case, wink wink…)

RTH                                    Return to Home

RTL                                    Return to Land

FBW                                   Fly By Wire (maintains stability while you guide the airplane)

STB                                    Stabilize (electronic stability)

ALH                                    Altitude Hold (maintains set altitude)

LTR                                    Loiter (makes aircraft circle a predetermined location)

WP                                     Waypoint (in a set list)

The Ardu Pilot has more terms in their programming ‘modes’, you may hear some of the autonomous pilots using these terms:

YAW_ACRO – Will not hold an yaw angle, not recommend for most flyers

YAW_HOLD – Will hold a Yaw angle

YAW_AUTO – Will point towards the next WP or however your mission requires

YAW_LOOK_AT_HOME – Always points at home

ROLL_PITCH_ACRO – Just Rate based Acro Mode

ROLL_PITCH_STABLE – stabilize the copter and try to hold user input angles

ROLL_PITCH_SIMPLE – Simple mode; corrected input based on the Z Gyro/compass

ROLL_PITCH_AUTO – Used by the auto mode to fly towards Waypoints.

THROTTLE_MANUAL – Just manual throttle, nothing fancy

THROTTLE_HOLD – Holds the desired altitude – interactive using throttle control

THROTTLE_AUTO – Used by Auto mode to change altitudes.

Where is all this going? Well there is really no way to predict. FedEx and UPS are saying they will have pilot-less aircraft in the next few years. Even today’s modern commercial jet liners have the ability to take off, navigate, and land without the pilot doing much if anything at many airports. Law enforcement and other government agencies across the USA are buying and using small hobby style multi-rotors for surveillance. One challenge is how the FAA and Government is going to keep up with Technology and its implementation as these situations grow.

Lets keep our hobby in mind here… when SEFSD lifted the “Autonomous Ban” on RC aircraft flown at our field some things changed. What is happening now is the scrutiny on these systems. It seems that any time there is any activity around them, it gets top-level attention and concern. What is being ignored as of late, are the incidents around ‘regular’ RC airplanes. No one seems to even raise an eyebrow when someone does the ‘Walk of Shame” out into our field to pick up fragments of what was once a RC airplane. A UAV crash is a UAV crash regardless of the model and should be considered equally as sensitive to our field and situation. Autonomous system or not, all field boundaries, AMA and FAA regulations still pertain. 400 ft limit, and adherence to our own field rules are essential. Autonomous and stabilized systems add a new technical aspect to our hobby that for some is quite interesting, and as for others, they could care less. I have seen opponents become advocates after a few hours of introduction to systems. It’s a wide open grab bag of perspectives.

Bottom line is, they are here to stay. Our own adherence to our own rules and guidelines will ensure that we, as a club, remain the model for operation within San Diego. We need to be vigilant in our own enforcement of these policies to prevent any negative views from city officials, the public, and the media. From the public perspective, a drone by any other name apparently is, a drone.

Electroglide Report for September 2013

So,  we had 9 pilots, but one of the forms I received back was blank… no name…. just scores. It WOULD have been good for 2nd place,  but with no name or any identifier… you get ZIP!

Jim Shelton was the only man in Open class this month as I had just returned from Hawaii and did not have any time to get my stuff ready. He did top the charts with a total score of 213.

Both Norm Arndt and Jim Shelton tied for the longest flight times of the day at 8:37.  Norm in round 3, and Jim in round 1.  Vince Gonzowski also broke our record for the SHORTEST flight as he had motor trouble in round 3 with a Lucky Dog time of 30 seconds!

So here is how it played out:

OPEN
Jim Shelton               213
