John Forester’s Comments to the FAA

I have submitted the following comment to the FAA:

Comment
I fly frequently with Silent Electric Flyers of San Diego, a model aircraft club associated with the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Our field is about 3 miles north of San Diego International Airport, and is about 90 degrees from the single runway of that airfield. We obey the 400 foot maximum altitude limit. During any day which is suitable for model aircraft flying, we have ten to twenty pilots at the field, with a maximum of 6 planes airborne at any one time. The operation is a continuing operation, known to airport control and the pilots of police and Coastguard helicopters. I suggest that the regulation allow a permanent notice for such operation. I suggest that the following statement be added to the suggested provisional rule:

For model aircraft flying fields that are within 5 miles of an airport and are operated by an organization as specified in (b) above, the prior notice may be a long-term agreement between the organization responsible for operating the model aircraft flying field and the airport air traffic control organization.
