There used to be a nice RC flying field in Fountain Valley located in Mile Square Park. Charles L. sent in some pics taken back in the early to mid-80s. Featured are Steve Neu, Steve Manganelli and Larry Jolly pylon racing. Steve Neu has provided some captions.
designed and built by Steve Manganelli might have been called “DC Tempest”. He had some “can” motors in it and was not that impressed with how it flew—he gave it to me and think I put some Keller 20s in it which made it a terror on the pylon racing circuit. I think I had 7 Sanyo 1200 SCR batteries in it.
MK all wood pattern plane that flew with a Keller 50/14 on 14 SCR Sanyo cells—great flier.
Muller King 85 F3B glider converted to electric for the first F5E WC—had 30 1200 SCR cells—weight was 11lbs! Current at full power was about 70 amps—or about 2000 watts—nothing today but powerful stuff back then.

In the pylon racing pictures I think the plane I was flying in those races was a converted .049 gas built up low wing little pattern plane that I got from Roman at West Coast Hobbies—i put a Sagami in it on 6 1200 Sanyo SCR cells. It won a lot of races.
