For the lucky folks who attended, this meeting was one of the best! The rest of you missed out on a fascinating presentation put on by Don Rice and Frank Gagliardi. Both of who are master craftsmen at detailing a model. Don started with a show-and-tell of some of the tips and techniques he uses for making a model look realistic. He brought in the wing to his huge P-47, covered in 12,000 plus rivets and assorted slotted fasteners. There were panel lines for all the access covers as well. All of which he applied himself using tiny sticky plastic dots and panels that he bought online. When I first looked at it I thought it was a factory job! He then displayed a model of a radial engine built from a kit with several improvements by Don. Finally, he sent around the rudder where we could see how he scuffed the panels and rivets with steel wool to bring out the details.
Frank followed with an explanation of several types of airbrushes and techniques. He then demonstrated his expertise on Steve Manganelli’s ARF Spitfire. The engine exhaust traces were added to the cowl area and around the engine with black paint. Pastel chalk was rubbed on sandpaper to create dust. He used a paintbrush to apply the dirt colored dust to the wheels and landing gear to make them look like it might have looked flying off dirt runways. Silver paint was flicked onto the wing leading edge with a toothbrush to simulate chips in the paint.
Frank and Don put a lot of effort into their presentations and we attendees benefited from it. We hope to see more of you at the next indoor meeting.
