We had a couple good storms the last four weeks, and our field is looking great! We had to close the field for a few days, one of them being the day of the electroglide contest. I appreciate that our members respect that the red lock means the field is closed in order to protect the runway surface. It is not easy to find the resources and volunteer time needed to resurface the field, so we close the field to protect it from unnecessary footprints that ruin the smooth surface. Brad came out early Sunday morning to at least give the greenlight to partially open the field so we could get some flying in!Years ago, new members had to do an onboarding checklist, where they get an orientation of the field rules by an existing member, and they sign that paper. The member giving the orientation also signs that paper, and turns it back to the club to allow the new member to begin flying ‘solo’. I think the checklist has its merits in promoting a culture of safety, and it is also a way to keep existing members refreshed with the field rules. They say when you teach, you also learn. Expect the New Member Checklist to be circulated soon, and for new members to our club to ask existing members to sign them off.
Lastly our new badge printer came in! Those with the laminated badge may continue using that through the end of the year. We’ll give our membership coordinator, Peter, a few weeks to set up the badge machine (he actually received two machines… but that’s another topic), and after that, new members will start receiving the hard plastic badges again.
